Benvenut* a Giornate Italiane! Welcome to Giornate Italiane!

In this open educational resource (OER), you will find a variety of at-home and in-class activities to help you gain a comprehensive understanding of Italian language and culture.

Giornate Italiane is divided into two parts: Units 1-6 cover beginners skills in Italian, while Units 7-11 cover intermediate skills. Our approach to this resource put communicative skills at the forefront of the language learning experience, allowing students the ability to play with language while learning the valuable skills that comprise our understanding and ability to participate in realistic scenarios.

This resource was designed following the flipped classroom model and is structured in a manner that allows students to learn concepts and lexicon, then check their comprehension with integrated H5P activities with instant feedback. During synchronous class time, students will work together to solidify the concepts studied through communicative task basked activities. These materials & activities are clearly defined in the units with the subheadings “A CASA” and “IN CLASSE”.

Each unit of this text contains assessments of listening (Ascoltiamo), speaking (Parliamo), reading (Leggiamo) and writing (Scriviamo). These targeted assessments take the place of pages-long tests that often led students to panic and frustration. We aim to build strategic approaches to isolating input and output skills for improvement. Likewise, end of unit “Check In Quizzes” allow students to show what they know at the end of each unit, providing students and instructors alike with the capability to check in and assess any barriers preventing students from their best performance.

Additionally, in each unit we propose a cultural project (Progetto Culturale) that provide students with guidelines and ideas to dive deeper into Italian culture while gradually incorporating the communicative skills and grammar that they’ve learned.

This project is a testament to the great things that can happen through patience, dedication, and open lines of communication between instructors and students. We hope you enjoy the activities proposed, and we look forward to hearing your feedback and impressions.

In bocca al lupo e buon divertimento!
