Il modo progressivo
Il modo progressivo (the progressive mood) is commonly used in the present tense and in the imperfect to describe an action that was happening or is happening at the moment mentioned. To form the progressivo, use a conjugated form of “stare” in the desired tense, and then add the gerundial form of the main verb. The conjugation of stare shows whether the action was ongoing at a precise point in the past or in the present. You must include BOTH a form of stare AND a gerund to show who was performing/ is performing the action.

- Presente:
- “Adesso stiamo comprando i biglietti per il treno. Tu? Che stai facendo?”
- “Sto andando al supermercato, devo comprare gli ingredienti per la cena.”
- Imperfetto:
- Stava viaggiando in Italia quando ha ricevuto un SMS dalle sue amiche.
- Noi stavamo aspettando il taxi a mezzogiorno, poi siamo partiti.
The present indicative tense, which you learned in Units 2 and 3 , can at times seems interchangeable with the progressive mood– but it is not. The present progressive implies the action is happening at the same moment it is expressed, while the past progressive shows that an action was going on at a specific time.
