G 1.7 – C’è / Ci sono (There is / There are) 

The verb esserci (to be) is used in the following expressions:

C’è + singular nouns

  • C’è un ragazzo in piazza -> There is a guy in the square

Ci sono + plural nouns

  • Ci sono delle donne al bar -> There are some women at the bar

The same expressions can be used in the negative and interrogative forms:

C’è un hotel in piazza?

No, non c’è. (un hotel in piazza)

The same expressions can also be used in the affirmative and interrogative forms:

C’è un bar in piazza?

Si, c’è. (un bar in piazza)
