Vocabolario: Le professioni
The binary nature of the Italian language is a current topic of public discourse in Italian speaking communities in Italy and abroad. A non-binary or gender neutral form does not currently exist in the Italian language, but many scholars and allies of the LGBTQI+ use the ‘schwa’ (ə) at the end of nouns so readers and listeners can interpret it to fall in line with their identity. A similar solution of using the asterisk at the end of nouns predate the schwa, but does not have an associated pronunciation and is used as a written form only. Es: Car* amic*= caro amico, cara amica, or carə amicə.
As you’ll see below, some professions do not have a feminine form and instead are made feminine by changing the article (es: un meccanico, una meccanico); forms that end in -ore become feminine by changing to -ice or -essa (es: un attore, un’attrice; un professore, una professoressa). Nouns that end in ‘ista’ are either masculine or feminine– context clues like related articles and adjectives will help you interpret which.
