Che cos’è il modo <<imperfetto>>? Cosa significa quando un’azione non è <<perfetta>> in italiano? Implica che l’azione era continua nel passato (cioè- non c’era un punto finale), o che era un’azione abitua nel passato. What is an “imperfect” mood? What does it mean when an action is not “perfect” in Italian? It simply implies that the action was either ongoing and continuous in the past (i.e., there was no stopping point) or that it was a habitual action in the past. Quando e come usare l’imperfetto:
- Use the imperfect tense to “set the scene” in the past: use it for weather, age, time.
- Avevo 15 anni… Ero molto giovane!
- Erano le 6 di mattina e faceva già caldo.
- Non pioveva mai d’estate.
- Use it for likes and dislikes, and physical and emotional states.
- Mi piaceva passare tempo con i miei amici, loro erano simpatici.
- Da giovane, Bruno era un bel bambino ma si arrabbiava facilmente.
- Use this mood to describe habitual actions in the past. You might see this with “da bambino/a”, “da giovane” or with adverbs that imply repetition/habit.
- Ogni anno, festeggiavo il mio compleanno con una torta.
- I miei amici venivano a festeggiarlo con me!
- For two actions taking place at the same time in the past.
- Mentre io dormivo, mia sorella incartava i regali.
- Durante la lezione, Marco disegnava sul quaderno mentre la maestra parlava.
- With modal verbs (dovere, potere, volere), to indicate intentionality (but not a certain outcome).
- Il fine settimana scorso volevamo andare al parco. = We wanted to go to the park (but it is unclear whether we did).
- I bambini potevano rimanere al mare per la settimana. = The kids could have stayed at the beach for the week (but it is unclear if they did).
- Dovevo sbrigare tante commissioni ieri….= I had to run a lot of errands yesterday (but it is unclear whether I did).
