Compound prepositions are formed when the simple prepositions DI, A, DA, IN, SU merge with determinative articles.

The preposition DI changes to DE and then merges with the articles. The preposition IN changes to NE then merges with the articles.
The compound prepositions are used when the object of the sentence is modified or specified.
For example:
- Vado in Italia → vado nell’Italia del nord -> I go to Italy → I go to Northern Italy
- Studio in biblioteca → Studio nella biblioteca centrale -> I study at the library → I study at the central library
- Vado a teatro → vado al Teatro La Fenice -> I go to the theatre → I go to the La Fenice theatre
