L’imperativo
The imperative is used to give orders and to offer advice or strong suggestions, always in the present tense. As follows, this form can be directed at three recipients: the second singular and plural (Tu and Voi) and the first plural (Noi).

Esempi:
- Mangia tanta frutta e verdura. Fa bene alla salute! Eat lots of fruits and veggies. It’s good for your health!
- Prenda questa medicina due volte al giorno. (Formal)Take this medicine twice a day.
- Dormite almeno otto ore. Sleep at least 8 hours.
- Finiamo di studiare, così poi andiamo in palestra. Let’s finish studying so we can go to the gym after.
The imperative of the second person plural (noi) corresponds to the English Let’s+ verb
- With the verbs ending in –ere and –ire, the imperative takes the same form as the indicative present.
- Metti lo sciroppo al suo posto!
- Dormiamo ancora 5 minuti…
- With verbs ending in –are, the imperative form of the persons Noi and Voi is also the same as the present indicative. An exception is the person Tu that changes the ending to –a in the imperative form:
- Ascoltiamo i consigli del dottore!
- Controllate bene le scadenze degli alimenti!
- Chiama l’ambulanza!

Imperativo negativo:
To form the negative imperative, for the persons Lei, noi and voi just put non before the conjugated verb.
- Professoressa, non sia troppo severa con gli studenti!
- Non andate a casa di Maria. Lei ha la febbre!
- Non facciamo rumore. Il papà si sta riposando.
For the person tu, place non before the infinitive form of the verb.

- Non mangiare tante caramelle. Ti verrà mal di pancia!
