When to use the instrumental case?
The Instrumental case is used in the following situations. This is a review of all the things we have mentioned so far:
A company
To indicate accompaniment (similar to English ‘’with’’). It is used with the preposition s in the meaning of “with, in accompaniment with, together with.”
- Putujem s mamom. – I travel with (my) mom.
A tool
To indicate the tool (an instrument) or means used to accomplish an action (similar to English ‘’with’’ or ‘’by’’): Pay attention – in Croatian, in this case, there is no preposition s. When the Instrumental is used in the context of explaining a tool or the means used to accomplish an action, there’s no preposition necessary.
- Putujem autobusom. – I travel by bus.
- Jedem juhu žlicom. – I eat soup with a spoon.
- Pišem pismo olovkom. – I write a letter with a pen.
A unity
To indicate a unity of two entities (when referring to one thing combined with another).
- Pijem čaj s limunom. – I drink tea with lemon.
The way we eat things
In today’s class we talked about the way we eat things. As you saw, we use the Instrumental case, but without the preposition s.
