In this lesson, you’ll see how our characters handle sold-out items, quick decisions, and polite requests. You’ll even face the use of the (in)famous izvoli/izvolite in a sentence. 😂 Get ready to pick up the expressions that make every shopping moment easier.

👥 People in Croatia do not necessarily always go to big shopping centers to get groceries. They also buy them in small shops, kiosks, and other places in their neighborhood. Talk with your classmates in order to find out where they buy certain things. More than one answer is possible.

👥 Work with your classmate. You are making plans for a weekend trip. Your task is to discuss your trip preparation and to make plans. Things you can potentially include are: where to go and what to bring/buy; what time to leave and at what time you will reach your destination; what to bring to eat and drink. The following questions might help you gather information. You will present your discussion to the rest of the class.

What does izvolite mean? (Why it’s complicated)
The Croatian word izvoli (informal) or izvolite (formal) is very common in shops, cafés, and everyday polite situations — but it doesn’t have one simple translation in English. Its meaning depends on who says it, when, and in what context.
1️⃣ “How can I help you?” / “What would you like?”
- Used by a shop assistant or waiter when you approach them.
2️⃣ “Here you go.” / “Here you are.”
- Used when giving someone an item (bread, receipt, change, coffee, etc.).
3️⃣ “Please, go ahead (help yourself).” / “Please, take it.”
- Used when offering something to someone.
4️⃣ “After you.” / “Please go first.”
- Used to be polite in everyday movements. For example, when holding a door
