Cjelina 5: Blagdani i tradicija

⚙️ 5 | 2 | Lekcija 1: Planovi za praznike – Gramatika

From – To: od – do

To express that something is happening over a longer period of time, we need to use the prepositions od – do (from – to). Both prepositions require the Genitive case.

Example:

  • Splitsko ljeto traje od 12. srpnja do 14. kolovoza.
  • The Split Summer Festival lasts from 12th of July to 14th of August

5.2.1 Zadatak 1. Od kada do kada?

Look at the following events that are happening in Croatia every year. During what time period is each event organized. You will see months written in numerals. However, you should not use numbers in your answers. Be careful how we write dates in Croatian.

📆 Događanja:

  • Splitsko ljeto (12.7. – 14.8.)
  • Advent u Zadru (25.12. – 2.1.)
  • Riječki karneval (17.1. – 17.2.)
  • Pula Film Festival (17.7. – 14.8.)
  • IN Music Festival (20.6. – 23.6.)
  • Zagreb Film Festival (14.11 – 21.11.)
  • Dubrovačke ljetne igre (10.8. – 25.8.)

Possessive Adjectives + Sound Change

In previous units, you learned about possessive adjectives (that something belongs to someone or something). We will talk more about inanimate possessive adjectives in this lesson, focusing on irregularities in the process of making the possessive adjective form(s). When we say irregularities, that mostly means a set of sound changes that appear when creating inanimate possessive adjectives. You already know that possessive adjectives are formed by adding a certain ending to a noun, such as in the following examples:

Samobor (city)

  • singular — samoborski kolač [m], samoborska kremšnita [f], samoborsko polje [n]
  • plural — samoborski kolači [m], samoborske kremšnite [f], samoborska polja [n]

Drniš (city)

  • singular — drniški pršut [m], drniška kuća [f], drniško polje [n]
  • plural — drniški pršuti [m], drniške kuće [f], drniška polja [n]

Brač (island)

  • singular — brački grad [m], bračka plaža [f], bračko selo [n]
  • plural — brački gradovi [m], bračke plaže [f], bračka sela [n]

What about exceptions?

Let us look at some of the most frequent changes (spelling/sound/stem changes)

Adding -a- + -čki

City Example
Zagreb zagreb-a-čka zelena potkova
Dubrovnik dubrov-a-čke zidine
Đakovo đakov-a-čka ergela
Vinkovci vinkov-a-čke jeseni

Sound change when /k/, /c/ > become /č/

Location Example
Amerika ameri-čki gradovi
Lipik lipi-čko lječilište
Krk kr-čki most

Sound change when /g/, /h/, /s/, or /z/ > become /š/

Location Example
Pag pa-ška čipka
Pariz pari-ške boemske četvrti
Zurich  /Cirih/ ciri-ško jezero

5.2.1 Zadatak 2. Odakle je? Čije je?

Look at the following traditional souvenirs, tourist places, and popular events in Croatia. How would you form a possessive adjective for each of them?

  • Be careful, the list includes regular -ski, -ški, -čki endings and those with irregularities.
  • Be careful what gender the noun is. The possessive adjectives have to agree with the nouns they describe.
