3.1.6 Zadatak 1: Na Braču
You were already introduced to Ines’ family and their interaction with James. Here is a continuation of the dialogue that you have encountered in today’s class session.
🔊 The following conversation is between James and Ines’ siblings. Listen to the dialogue below and answer the questions.

Transkripcija
| Lana: | Bog, James! Drago mi je. |
|---|---|
| James: | I meni je drago. Napokon da se upoznamo. |
| Lana: | Da, napokon… I, James, kako ti se sviđa ovdje? |
| James: | Lijepo je. Mirno i ugodno. |
| Lana: | Koliko dugo si već u Splitu? |
| James: | Skoro tri mjeseca. |
| Lana: | Samo tri mjeseca? Pa ti odlično pričaš hrvatski. Svaka čast! |
| James: | Hvala. |
| Lana: | A koji su ti planovi za danas? Kamo idete ti i Ines? |
| James: | Ne znam, nisam siguran. Ines planira naše aktivnosti. Mislim da danas popodne idemo u pustinju Blaca, a navečer idemo u Bol. |
| Josip: | Tako je. Danas pustinja Blaca, a sutra Vidova gora i gospodarstvo Kaštil Gospodnetić. Ines i ja već imamo plan za cijeli vikend. |
| Lana: | Ali prvo ručak. Mama priprema ručak za sve nas. |
| James: | Naravno. |
| Josip: | Danas domaća kuhinja, a sutra navečer idemo u restoran na bračke delicije i vino. |
| Lana: | Odlična ideja! |
| James: | Jedva čekam. |
| Josip: | James, ti si iz Austina, je li tako? |
| James: | Da. |
| Josip: | Ja želim ići u Ameriku. Želim ići u New York, Los Angeles, Chicago… Mislim da je Kalifornija super, ali i Teksas naravno. |
| James: | Teksas je broj jedan. No, šalu na stranu, Austin je stvarno cool grad. |
| Josip: | Tvoji roditelji žive tamo? |
| James: | Ne više. Oni sada žive u Coloradu. U Coloradu živi i moja sestra. |
| Lana: | A kako vi provodite vrijeme kad ste zajedno? |
| James: | Pa ne znam. Obično kad idem u posjet mi zajedno večeramo. Ništa posebno. |
| Ines: | James, Lana! Ručak je gotov! |
🤔 Time to reflect: Think about common conversation topics when meeting someone for the first time. Based on the conversation between James, Lana, and Josip, answer the following questions in English.
Questions: If you were in Croatia…
- Would you have a conversation like this one with a person that you just met? Why?
- What other topic(s) would you potentially touch upon with a person that you just met?
3.1.6 Zadatak 2: Kako se kaže?
In today’s lesson, we covered many useful sentences for everyday conversations. Let’s see how much you remember! As you work through this task, it’s a good idea to listen to all the dialogues from today’s lesson. Copy the questions listed below into the answer box and write your answers.
Based on the class materials, how would you express the following scenarios in Croatian?
- You are always arguing with someone (there is a phrase for this).
- How to ask about children’s age? (Croats usually refer to education, not exact age.)
- How would you say that coffee represents more than just a drink? (Ines said this)
- How would you express your excitement and that you cannot wait to go somewhere? (James said this)
- How to give a compliment to someone on their language skills. (Lana said this)
- How to offer food or drink to someone? (Baka Lidija said this)
- How to express compliments about someone’s city/country. (Josip said this)
3.1.6 Zadatak 3: Druženje
👥 Rad u paru: You need to meet virtually with a classmate to complete the task. After your conversation, submit your assignment through our Learning Management System.
Task: Following the dialogue patterns that you have encountered in class and homework materials for today, create a dialogue with your classmate.

Scenario 1 (pair-work):
You are spending time in Croatia. You are making weekend plans with your local friend. Make a cohesive dialogue about what to do, where to go, and discuss traditional Croatian free time activities. Your local friend will invite you to spend the weekend with his/her family.
Scenario 2 (group-work):
Work in a group of four at least. You are visiting the family of your local friend for the first time. Make a dialogue that will have an appropriate cultural structure with the local family.
Discuss family members:
- Discuss their characteristics, describe their interests
Usual activities (free time, weekend):
- Ask about local activities, compare typical activities
Discuss family gatherings:
- Talk about differences and similarities, discuss activities you engage in
Conversation topics:
- Use the appropriate topic, make comments in the conversation, give a compliment(s)
3.1.6 Zadatak 4: Kultura 🇭🇷
🌍 In today’s lesson, you were not only exposed to language, but also to culture — how people think, interact, and make meaning in everyday situations. Through James’ experience on Brač, you saw how Croats speak, connect, and spend time together.
Now it’s your turn to reflect on how people communicate, what is valued in relationships, and how those values may be similar or different from your own culture.
Read the questions below and answer them in English as thoughtfully and as detailed as possible. When asked to respond in Croatian, do your best based on what you’ve learned.

- How does Ines’ mother address grandfather Josip? Why do you think that is?
- What do you think the message is that Ines’ father sends when he greets James?
- What is the father’s reaction to Toni’s questions? Do you find it to be a polite reaction?

- Do you think that James responded appropriately to Josip’s and Toni’s questions? Why?
- What might an American do in reaction to Josip’s and Toni’s questions?
- How would you react to these questions? Provide your possible reply to Josip and Toni in Croatian.
- What do you think is the overall tone of this dialogue? How do you visualize this gathering?

Slobodno vrijeme
🔊 This final section is optional, but highly recommended. Listen to the dialogues from today’s lesson again and answer the following questions.
- What do you think the main differences are between Croatia and the U.S. in terms of free time activities?
- You learned that Croats spend a lot of time together. Why do you think that is?
- What do you think are the most important values for Croats when we consider their family circles?
- Based on the homework dialogue, why do you think Croats do not include topics like jobs as part of their main conversation? What are the values that Croats cherish in their conversation when they meet someone for the first time? Think of everything we discussed in class to make your conclusion.
