She’s invited him to spend the weekend with her family, and James is excited to see more of Dalmatia, meet her parents, and maybe even try some homemade specialties. As they stand on the deck, Ines pulls out her phone to show James photos of her parents, siblings, and relatives…

In this lesson, you’ll join James and Ines on the ferry ride and dive deeper into the topic of family. You already know the basic words, now it’s time to reinforce them, learn a few new ones, and see how families come up in real conversations. Let’s set sail! 🚢

3.1.2 Zadatak 3: Još malo o Ines

Work with a classmate and take turns asking and answering questions to check each other’s knowledge of family-related vocabulary. Here is an example for you.

3.1.2 Zadatak 4: Moja uža i šira obitelj

1️⃣ General information: Provide basic information about your nuclear family.  Answer the following question.

• Kako se zove tvoj: tata, brat, stric, ujak, tetak, djed, rođak/bratić
• Kako se zove tvoja: mama, sestra, strina, ujna, teta, baka, rodica/sestrična

2️⃣ After you answer all the questions above, make your own family tree. Then present it to one of your classmates, but don’t show them. Your classmate will need to draw what you tell them. Finally, compare the images. How accurate is what they drew? Switch roles when done.

3️⃣ Having your classmate’s family tree, ask some additional questions that are listed below.

• Kakav je tvoj brat? and/or Kakva je tvoja sestra?
• Kakav je tvoj tata? and/or Kakva je tvoja mama?
• Što je po zanimanju tvoj tata/tvoja mama?

In your answers, use appropriate adjective(s) when describing a person in your family. Be careful what gender you need to use.

Rad u paru: Here are the empty family trees of our characters from the U.S. Each of you will have a completed family tree either of Laura or James. For example, if you receive a completed tree of Laura’s family, your task is to ask your classmate questions in order to complete James’ family tree. When done, switch roles. Start each question with appropriate structure.
