Verb stems and verbs in -ati

All Croatian verbs end in -ti (gledati, to watch) or –ći (reći, to say). However, each of them has subgroups. In order to get accustomed to Croatian verbs and how to conjugate them, the stems will be listed for you. Stems are not words by themselves, so we will always write a hyphen at the end of them.

In this part you will work with the most common group of verbs in Croatian – those that end in -ati (as part of the -ti verb group). In the following modules you will work in more detail on other forms of the verbs. Look at the table below to see how the endings of –ati verbs are combined with verb stems. For example:

Gledati

pronoun singular pronoun plural
ja gled-am mi gled-amo
ti gled- vi gled-ate
on / ona / ono gled-a oni / one / ona gled-aju

In the infinitive form of gledati, the vowel preceding the –ti (-a-) is not normally part of the stem but serves to link the infinitive ending to the stem. Thus, the stem of gledati is gled-, the stem of slušati is sluš-, the stem of svirati is svir-. Most of the other verbs that you have encountered so far in this module follow the same conjugation pattern as gledati.

2.2.1 Zadatak 5: Što ti često radiš?

Finish the following sentences in a logical way. Read each question carefully in order to understand what verb you need to use. First, finish the question form that a friend might ask you. Then, provide an answer based on how the sentence starts. Na primjer:

Ti često igraš sport?

  • Ne, ja ne igram niti jedan sport, ali često gledam filmove.
