Nominative and Accusative

Review:

The Nominative case endings of nouns are the “dictionary forms” for nouns.  Almost all of the nouns that you have encountered in Unit 1 have been in the Nominative.

Singular Plural
masculine nouns end in a consonant masculine plural nouns mostly end in –i
feminine nouns end in –а feminine plural nouns mostly end in –e
neuter nouns end in –о or –e neuter plural nouns mostly end in –a

We also already talked about nouns in the Accusative case. Here is a quick review:

The Accusative case singular form endings for

  •   masculine nouns (not referring to people) are like they are in Nominative
  •   feminine nouns change from: –a → –u
  •   neuter nouns are like the Nominative
Gender Nominative Accusative
masculine grad grad
feminine država državu
neuter selo / polje selo / polje

🪧 Adjectives: Accusative singular

Adjective Endings in the Accusative Singular Forms

In Unit 1 you learned that the adjective endings (basic endings singular: -Ø, -а, -о /-е; basic endings plural: -i, -e, -a) agree with nouns by gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and by number (singular, plural).

  • dobar student [masculine singular]
  • dobri studenti [masculine plural]
  • dobra studentica [feminine singular]
  • dobre studentice [feminine plural]
  • dobro dijete [neuter singular]
  • dobra djeca [neuter plural]

Adjectives also agree with nouns in terms of case.

That is, if a noun is the direct object and thus in the Accusative case, the adjectives that describe that noun will also need to be in the Accusative case. Fortunately, there is only one new adjective ending that you have to learn for the Accusative case at this point.

Feminine

Adjectives that agree with feminine singular nouns in the Accusative change from their Nominative adjective ending to the Accusative ending –u (just like the noun changes). Here is an example:

  • Zagreb ima lijepu, staru katedralu. [feminine, accusative]

Masculine and neuter

In the Accusative, adjectives modifying neuter and masculine nouns, that do not refer to people, keep the same endings as in the Nominative case. Here is an example:

  • Zagreb ima lijep, moderan trg. [masculine, accusative]
  • Zagreb ima lijepo, veliko jezero. [neuter, accusative]
