Unit-final task

🤔 Pre-class task
Prepare yourself to make a dialogue (role-play) and include the following elements. One of you will be an international student and your instructor will play the role of a local friend. Use all previous tasks in this unit to inform you and help you make a meaningful dialogue.
Scenario
You are in Croatia studying for a semester. Choose one city that you want to visit. Your friend (i.e., your instructor in this role) will also give you some of their own suggestions. You need to say where and why you want to go there. Negotiate with your friend about your destination and say where your suggested city is located in the country. What are your interests and what will you do in that city? Say what you want to visit (squares, museums, parks, etc.). You will both suggest a hotel to stay in, and provide information about the hotel: its location, distance from main city landmarks, price per night, etc. The accommodation search will happen during this conversation. Compare both of your choices of accommodation and decide where you will stay. Discuss your ideas about tours around the city, such as landmarks to see.
You will be able to use Google maps during the conversation! Set your Google maps to Croatian.
🗣️ In-class task
Listen to each of your classmates performing their dialogues. Take notes about their cultural performance. Your homework assignment will be to write a reflection on the cultural components that you noticed in each of your peers’ dialogues. When your classmate writes a response to your own performance, you will need to provide them with a follow-up and comment on their reflection.
As a person who is evaluating your peers’ performance, reflect on the following components:
- Evaluate how successful they were in navigating the conversation in a culturally appropriate way.
- Did they recognize and-or use expressions that present a figurative meaning?
- Were they able to recognize, understand, and react to non-verbal cues in dialogues with the instructor?
- What else could they have done in performing real-life situational discourse?
💬 Post-class task
After the role-play, you need to submit your notes from the class session on your peers’ performance. In this way, you’ll receive feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement, helping you to refine your skills further.
🙋 Optional task
As a person who is reading responses from your peers, you can engage further in the discussion. If you do, be sure to include at least the following in your comment
- Do you agree with them? If yes/no – why?
- What will you do to improve (if needed) your future dialogues?
- Any other comments?
