Cjelina 8: Odnosi u društvu

I to je to

As this course comes to an end, so does our time with the people whose lives we followed throughout the year. Little by little, their days became familiar to us, and what once felt new slowly turned into something comfortable. Now, change is coming: Santiago is getting ready to go back home, while the others stay behind, continuing their lives with an empty space where friends used to be. And from now on, nothing stays quite the same. Before we say goodbye, this lesson invites you to pause, look back, and remember the people and moments that shaped this story.

🤔 Pre-class task

In this final lesson, you will look back at the main textbook characters whose lives you followed throughout the year. Your task is to prepare a presentation about one character of your choice and share what stayed with you. Talk about what you learned about the character (for example, their hobbies, interests, likes, and dislikes), what you found interesting, irritating, or funny about them and the situations they were in, and which moments you remember best. At the very end, you may also explain how this character helped you understand Croatian and daily life in Croatia (this last part can be in English). This is a recap and reflection activity, not a test. There are no “right” or “wrong” characters to choose.

Choose one character from Navrh jezika (Santiago, Lucija, Marin, Šimun) and prepare a presentation in which you introduce the character, summarize what we know about them, and highlight moments, topics, or situations that were memorable, fun, surprising, or challenging. You may use any materials from the textbook to support your presentation.

What Can You Talk About?

Use the ideas below to guide you. You do not need to include everything — choose what feels most relevant to your experience as a learner.

2️⃣ What did you learn through this character?
Topics, situations, language, or cultural moments connected to this character.

3️⃣ Memorable moments
Scenes or situations you found interesting or surprising.

4️⃣ Challenges and opinions
Anything you found confusing, difficult, irritating, or that you strongly agree or disagree with.

5️⃣ Personal connection
How you relate to this character or why they stood out to you.

📊 Presentation tips

How to Prepare a Good Presentation

When preparing your presentation, keep the following points in mind:

Structure

️ Time

Aim for 7–8 minutes. Make sure your presentation is not too short and not too long.

🎯 Engagement

Make your presentation interesting and engaging for your audience. Think about how you introduce your character and how you keep listeners involved.

🖼️ Visual Support

Use clear and relevant visuals (images or textbook materials) to support your ideas. Visuals should help the audience follow your story, not distract from it.

🗣️ Preparation and Delivery

Be well prepared. You may use notes, but try not to read directly from them. Occasional glances are fine — aim to speak naturally and confidently.

🌍 Cultural Language

Use appropriate cultural phrases and expressions from the textbook to describe the character and their everyday life more vividly.

🔍 Cultural Comparison

Include at least two cultural differences between life in Croatia and life in your home country, based on what you learned through the character.

💬 Personal Opinion

Share your own opinion about the character. Explain why you feel this way, using examples from the textbook or your experience as a learner.

Questions for the Audience

End your presentation with one or two thought-provoking questions about the character — for example, about their future, choices, or what life might bring next.

🗣️ In-class task

While your classmates are presenting, take notes on their presentations. You will need to ask additional questions and / or give suggestions, like getting clarification on certain components, asking for elaboration, or giving suggestions on what else to include and how to improve future presentations (based on what you remember).

Questions to answer:

  • Was the presentation engaging and interesting?
  • Was the presentation within the suggested time frame? Was it too short or maybe too long?
  • Was the presentation equipped with adequate visual components?
  • Was the student well prepared for their presentation – How much did they look at their notes? Never? Just an occasional glance? Or did they read straight from their notes?
  • Was there appropriate use of cultural phrases during the presentation to depict our textbook character better?
  • Did the student successfully elaborate on at least two cultural differences between Croatia and their home country in the presentation?
  • Did the student provide their own opinion about the textbook character? Was their opinion detailed and elaborate??
  • Did the student ask some interesting food for thought-type questions at the end of the presentation? Something that will make us think about our textbook character and their future life?

💬 Post-class task

As part of your homework assignment, you need to submit your notes from the class session on your peers’ performance. In this way, you’ll also receive feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement, helping you to refine your skills further.

🙋 Optional task

As a person who is reading responses from your peers, you can engage further in the discussion. If you do, be sure to include at least the following in your comment

  • Do you agree with them? If yes/no – why?
  • What will you do to improve (if needed) your future dialogues?
  • Any other comments?
