Noun POSAO
The noun posao (meaning “job” or “work”) is a masculine noun, but its declension is a bit irregular and can be confusing at first. In its base form, posao ends in –ao, but this changes in other cases. When we start declining the noun, the -a- in the middle disappears, and the final -o changes to -l. This means that, for most forms, we are actually working with the base posl-, even though that’s not obvious from the nominative form.
In the singular, we add regular masculine case endings to this base. Since posao is an inanimate noun, its accusative singular form is the same as the nominative — posao.
In the plural, there is one more rule to follow. The base posl- is only one syllable long, and when a masculine noun has a short base like this, the suffix –ov- is inserted between the base and the plural endings. That’s why we get the form poslovi for nominative plural.
Even though the changes might seem strange at first, they follow clear patterns, and with a bit of practice, posao becomes just another friendly noun in your vocabulary.
