Conditional clauses

In Croatian, conditional clauses are used to express situations that depend on certain conditions. These conditions can be real, hypothetical, or impossible, based on how likely or unlikely they are to occur. The structure of these sentences involves two parts: the if-clause, which states the condition, and the main clause, which gives the result or outcome.
There are various ways to form each type of conditional clause, but for now, we will focus on a few of the most common structures. As you progress in your learning, you will encounter other (more advanced) forms of conditional sentences. For the moment, we will concentrate on those that are most suitable for your current level.
Hypothetical Conditional Clauses
These clauses describe conditions that are hypothetical or less likely to happen. They often express situations that are imagined rather than actual.
How to form hypothetical conditional clauses?
| Gender | KAD + Present Conditional if-clause (condition) |
+ Present Conditional main clause (result) |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | Kad bih imao para na računu, | kupio bih novi laptop. |
| Feminine | Kad bih imala para na računu, | kupila bih novi laptop. |
Look at the pattern for all pronouns and masculine / feminine gender:
| Who | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| ja | Kad bih imao | Kad bih imala |
| ti | Kad bi imao | Kad bi imala |
| on | Kad bi imao | — |
| ona | — | Kad bi imala |
| mi | Kad bismo imali | Kad bismo imale |
| vi | Kad biste imali | Kad biste imale |
| oni | Kad bi imali | — |
| one | — | Kad bi imale |
Note: neuter gender (ono/ona) is not included.
