Directions and case use
When giving direction on how to get from one place to another, you will most likely need to use several different cases. It all depends on the direction (i.e., the verb you use or a preposition you use). Let’s investigate what you have encountered in today’s lesson.
Example:
- Skreni lijevo u [Zadarsku] ulicu.
- Skreni desno u [Zagrebačku] ulicu.
- Idi ravno do [Zagrebačke] ulice.
- Nastavi [Splitskom] ulicom sve do [Riječke] ulice.
What case do you need in these situations?
Accusative
- Skreni lijevo u Zadarsku ulicu. (Turn left onto Zadarska Street.)
- Skreni desno u Zagrebačku ulicu. (Turn right onto Zagrebačka Street.)
Genitive
- Idi ravno do Zagrebačke ulice. (Go straight [until you get] to Zagrebačka Street.)
Instrumental
- Nastavi Splitskom ulicom sve do Riječke ulice. (Continue along Splitska Street all the way to Riječka Street.)
Locative
- Nastavi prema Zagrebačkoj ulici i onda skreni lijevo. (Continue toward Zagrabačka Street and then turn left.)
