Some deviation from a general rule for –ATI verbs

You already know that the general rule for verbs that end in –ati is that these verbs will take the endings –am (ja gledam), –aš (ti gledaš), –a (on/-a gleda), –amo (mi gledamo), –ate (vi gledate), –aju (oni/-e gledaju). However, some –ati verbs behave differently. When the verb stem ends in –d, –t, –k, –g, –s, –z, –c, or –h, these sounds merge with –j in the present tense, creating a new sound. After this change, the verb takes a different set of endings: –em, –eš, –e, –emo, –ete, –u. For example, in today’s lesson you encountered verbs with -g-.

  • pomagati (to help) > ja pomag + j-em
    • g + j = ž
    • ja pomaž-em
