Conditional clauses

In Croatian, conditional clauses are used to express situations that depend on certain conditions. These conditions can be real, hypothetical, or impossible, based on how likely or unlikely they are to occur. The structure of these sentences involves two parts: the if-clause, which states the condition, and the main clause, which gives the result or outcome.

There are various ways to form each type of conditional clause, but for now, we will focus on a few of the most common structures. As you progress in your learning, you will encounter other (more advanced) forms of conditional sentences. For the moment, we will concentrate on those that are most suitable for your current level.

1. Real Conditional Clauses

These clauses describe conditions that are realistic or possible. The condition can actually be fulfilled, and the result is a logical outcome if the condition occurs.

How to form real conditional clauses?

AKO + PRESENT TENSE + FUTURE TENSE
Ako imam para na računu, kupit ću novi mobitel
if-clause (condition) main clause (result)
AKO + PRESENT TENSE + IMPERATIVE
Ako imaš para na računu, kupi novi mobitel.
if-clause (condition) main clause (result)

3.3 Zadatak 1: Present Tense

Complete the sentences by choosing the correct verb from the list. Use the Present tense of the verb and pay attention to the subject of the sentence.

  • čuti, dobiti, pričati, imati, biti, razumjeti

3.3 Zadatak 2: Imperative

Complete the sentences by choosing the correct verb from the list. Use the Imperative form of the verb and pay attention to the subject of the sentence.

  • ponijeti, paziti, obući, izabrati, stati, pitati
❗ If you need a quick reminder on how to form the imperative, check the lesson in Unit 1.

2. Hypothetical Conditional Clauses

These clauses describe conditions that are hypothetical or less likely to happen. They often express situations that are imagined rather than actual.

How to form hypothetical conditional clauses?

KAD + PRESENT CONDITIONAL  + PRESENT CONDITIONAL
Kad bih imao para na računu, kupio bih novi mobitel.
Kad bih imala para na računu kupila bih novi mobitel.
if-clause (condition) main clause (result)

3.3 Zadatak 3: Likely to happen

Drag and drop the correct second part of the sentence to complete it. Make sure the sentence is logical and grammatically correct.

3.3. Zadatak 4: Conditional form

Choose the correct conditional form to complete each sentence. Pay attention to the subject and make sure the sentence is logical.

3.3 Zadatak 5: Dovrši rečenice

Complete the sentences by choosing the correct verb from the list. Use the conditional form of the verb and pay attention to the subject of the sentence (number and gender).

  • organizirati, imati, podučavati, zaposliti, izabrati, biti, posjetiti

3. Unreal Conditional Clauses

These clauses refer to conditions that are contrary to fact, meaning they describe situations that did not happen or cannot happen because they are based on a different past.

How to form unreal conditional clauses?

DA + PRESENT TENSE + PRESENT CONDITIONAL
Da imam para na računu, kupio bih novi mobitel.
Da imam para na računu, kupila bih novi mobitel.
if-clause (condition) main clause (result)

3.3 Zadatak 6: Unreal

Match each conditional part with the correct main part of the sentence so that the sentence is logical and grammatically correct.

3.3 Zadatak 7: Dovrši rečenice

Complete the sentences by choosing the correct verb from the list. Use the conditional form of the verb and pay attention to the subject of the sentence (number and gender).

  • peći, učiti, glumiti, putovati, nositi, voziti, kuhati, raditi, pjevati
