Differences between related verbs of rasti

The verb rasti (to grow) is an imperfective verb. In Croatian, it doesn’t have one single perfective partner, the way some other verbs do. Instead, several different perfective verbs are derived from rasti, and each of them expresses a specific type of completed growth. These perfective verbs are not just simple aspectual pairs of rasti. Rather, they add different nuances and meanings, depending on how or what has grown. ◎ IZRASTI
Meaning: To grow out of something, or to reach maturity from a starting point. Think of izrasti as emphasizing origin and development. Something starts small, from a seed or a root, and grows outwards until it becomes mature or recognizable.
- Cvijet je izrastao iz sjemena. → The flower grew out of the seed.
- Dječak je izrastao u ozbiljnog mladića. → The boy grew into a serious young man.
◎ PORASTI
Meaning: To increase in size, quantity, or intensity from the current state. With porasti, the focus is on change upward — something was at one level and has risen.
- Cijena je porasla za 10%. → The price went up by 10%.
- Interes za koncert je naglo porastao. → Interest in the concert suddenly increased.
- Temperatura je porasla tijekom dana. → The temperature rose during the day.
◎ NARASTI
Meaning: To grow to a certain size, height, or extent. Narasti marks the final reached growth — how tall, big, or high something has become.
- Dijete je naraslo deset centimetara u godinu dana. → The child has grown ten centimeters in a year.
- Stablo je naraslo preko dva metra u zadnjih godinu dana. → The tree has grown over two meters in the past year.
◎ DORASTI
Meaning: To grow enough to be capable of something; to reach maturity or readiness. Dorasti is not about physical growth only, it’s often about capability, responsibility, or preparedness.
- On je dorastao za tu odgovornost. → He has grown enough for that responsibility (i.e., he is capable of doing something) .
- Nakon godina vježbe, konačno je dorastao konkurenciji. → After years of training, he has finally grown enough to match the competition (i.e., he is capable of competing with others for something).
◎ SRASTI
Meaning: To grow together, to fuse, to heal as one. Srasti describes things that merge into one unit through growth or healing.
- Dvije grane su srasle i sada izgledaju kao jedna. → The two branches grew together and now look like one.
- Kosti su srasle nakon operacije. → The bones fused after the surgery.
