Welcome to Lesson 1!
This is the first stop on our year-long journey and you are in the driver’s seat. Today you will be working on your own and exploring the content at your own pace. This lesson is a little different from the ones that follow because it is our chance to set the stage for everything ahead.
Your task is to meet the four friends whose lives you will be following all year. First, you will get the basics. Then, you will go deeper and hear what they have to say about themselves. As you go, try to imagine their personalities, picture their habits, guess their quirks, and think about how they might act in different situations.
Along the way, you will be exploring some new vocabulary. Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything right away. But do try to make a list of words that you think might come in handy when you talk. Once you get to know our new friends, it will be your time to shine. You will introduce yourself to the class and step right into the “story” we will be building together this year.

Pozdrav svima, ja sam Santiago. Moj otac je porijeklom s otoka Visa, ali se u svojim dvadesetima preselio u SAD, gdje je upoznao moju majku, koja je porijeklom iz Čilea. Rođen sam i odrastao u San Franciscu, ali cijeli život živim između tri kulture. Kaliforniju smatram svojim domom, ali prošle sam se godine odlučio privremeno doseliti na otok na kojem je moj otac odrastao. Obnavljam kuću kako bi se on mogao vratiti na otok po stare dane. Znam da mu je to velika želja i želim mu pomoći da je ostvari. Nije mi bilo teško preseliti se iz više razloga — volim mir i tišinu ovog otoka, a i oduvijek sam bio vezan uz očev kraj. Posao mi također dopušta da putujem, što je učinilo odluku o preseljenju još lakšom. Laptop mi je sve što mi treba. U slobodno vrijeme se bavim fotografijom, volim putovati i istraživati nova mjesta. Za sebe mogu reći da sam optimist i veselog duha. No, definitivno imam i tu neku crtu dalmatinske i latino krvi u sebi. Kad to kažem, mislim prvenstveno na to da sam ponekad tvrdoglav i teško me je razuvjeriti..eh da, a i lako planem.

Kao tinejdžer sam želio živjeti u velikom gradu, ali što sam stariji, sve više shvaćam da je otok sve što mi treba — volim masline, lozu i more. Ukratko, volim mir i jednostavnost života. Svaki dan nastojim uživati u prirodi i svježem zraku. Mogu reći da me karijera ne zanima, tehnologija mi nije najvažnija stvar i ne provodim puno vremena na internetu ili društvenim mrežama. No, nemojte me krivo shvatiti. Iako živim jednostavnim životom, volim biti okružen ljudima koji gledaju svijet drugačijim očima. Volim dobar razgovor i različitosti koje svijet nudi. To je i jedan od razloga zašto su mi prijatelji važni, oni mi daju ono što ja nisam i pomažu mi da otvorim vidike i naučim nešto novo svaki dan.

Bok, ja sam Marin. Porijeklom sam s otoka Visa, ali već neko vrijeme živim u Zadru. Moji prijatelji bi vjerojatno rekli da sam radoholičar i da volim imati sve pod kontrolom i bili bi u pravu. Volim red, organizaciju i osjećaj da je svaki dan ispunjen do zadnje minute. Imam svoj privatni biznis i posao mi oduzima veliki dio vremena, ali meni to ne smeta. Za njih uvijek nađem vremena, ma koliko bio zauzet. Najdraži su mi naši zajednički odmori, nekoliko dana daleko od obaveza, samo smijeh i dobra energija. Bok, ja sam Lucija i živim u Zagrebu. Iako uživam u brzom ritmu metropole, ponekad volim pobjeći iz grada i uživati u miru i tišini u krugu najbližih. Jedna stvar koju morate znati o meni jest ta da ne mogu bez društvenih mreža. Zapravo, malo sam i ovisna o njima, ali trudim se držati balans.
