In chapter 2, you learned how to form yes/no questions using 1) intonation 2) “est-ce que” 3) “n’est-ce pas?” – review the material here if needed.
To form open-ended questions, you will need interrogative words:

Usage
To form open-ended questions, use the interrogative words with the following format:
interrogative word + est-ce que / qu‘ + subject + verb + rest of the sentence
- Où est-ce que Tex va manger?
- Quand est-ce qu‘elles vont à la plage?
- Comment est-ce que Paw-Paw visite l’université?
- Combien est-ce que Fiona paie pour ses livres?
Attention: To use “combien de”, specify a noun after the interrogative word:
combien de/d + noun + est-ce que / qu‘ + subject + verb + rest of the sentence
- Combien de livres est-ce que Tammy a dans sa chambre?
- Combien de frères est-ce que Tex a dans sa famille?
