Contractions with à and de
Règle
The prepositions à and de contract with the definite articles le and les to give the following forms:
- à + le = au
- à + les = aux
- de + le = du
- de + les = des
Attention:
La and l’ do not contract after à and de.
Usage: à
- The preposition à follows many verbs such as aller and voyager. When followed by a noun, you will have: à + definite article + noun, and you may need a contraction.
- Example: Je vais
à lecampus. → Je vais au campus. - Example: Nous voyageons
à lesÉtats-Unis. → Nous voyageons aux États-Unis.
- Example: Je vais
| Tammy: Bon, demain on va au gymnase, hein?
Tex: Non, je vais à la bibliothèque demain. |
Tammy: And tomorrow we’ll go to the gym, eh?
Tex: No, I am going to the library tomorrow. |
Usage: de
- The preposition de follows many verbs such as faire and être . When followed by a noun, you will have: de + definite article + noun, and you may need a contraction.
- Example: Je fais
de lebasket. → Je fais du basket. - Example: Nous sommes
de lesÉtats-Unis. → Nous sommes des États-Unis.
- Example: Je fais
- The preposition de is also part of many expressions of location such as: près de (next to), in which case, you will have: de + definite article + noun, and you may need a contraction.
- Example: La bibliothèque est près
de lerestaurant. → La bibliothèque est près du restaurant. - You will learn these expressions in the following lesson.
