9.3 Grammar: Кем вы рабо́таете?

Люби́мая Грамма́тика

Part 1: Review

Notice the question Кем вы рабо́таете? Recall that ‘чем’ is the Instrumental case form of ‘что’, and so ‘кем’ is the Instrumental form of ‘кто.’  The question then is how do we understand this question, ‘Кем вы рабо́таете?’

In earlier units, you learned words for several professions and occupations. You may want to review those now.

People and Professions

Read and listen to the following Russian descriptions of people. You have seen these before.

  • Listen for their names and their professions / occupations.
  • Refer to Словарь-2

Part 2: Кем вы рабо́таете?

In Unit 8 you learned that the Instrumental Case can be used to describe the means by which one does something. The use of the Instrumental case here is similar. Think of the Instrumental case (in general) as imparting the notion ‘in this way‘, ‘by means of‘, or simply ‘as‘.

For the professionals listed above, we can talk about them in the following way. Note the use of the Instrumental endings. To review spelling rules for endings, go to the Grammar Chart page or the Instrumental Case instructional page.
