8.7 Grammar: НА неде́ле, В году́

To say ‘in a year’, as you know, you say:
в году́
The preposition ‘в’ takes the Prepositional Case. ‘Год’ is part of that small class of masculine words that takes an irregular -у ending in the Prepositional Case.
You learned to say in which year people were born:
Он роди́лся в 1989 (ты́сяча девятьсо́т во́семьдесят девя́том году́).
The final number, if you recall, is an ordinal number, and declines like an adjective.
To say ‘last year‘, ‘this year‘, or ‘next year‘ you do something very similar. You use Prepositional Case with the preposition ‘в’, as in:
Мы бы́ли в Росси́и в про́шлом году́.
We were in Russia last year.
В э́том году́ она́ де́лает дома́шнее зада́ние ка́ждый день.
This year she does her homework every day.
В сле́дующем году́ он бу́дет в А́нглии.
Next year he will be in England.
на неде́ле
If you want to talk about ‘last week‘, ‘this week‘, or ‘next week’, however, you need to use the preposition на + Prepositional Case, as in:
Я написа́ла курсову́ю рабо́ту на про́шлой неде́ле.
I wrote my course paper last week.
На э́той неде́ле я рабо́таю до́ма.
This week I’m working at home.
Мы не бу́дем учи́ться на сле́дующей неде́ле.
We won’t be / in school learning next week.
The words про́шлый ‘previous / last‘ and сле́дующий ‘next‘ are both adjectives and decline, as usual, in agreement with the gender, number, and Case of the noun they modify.
You notice, of course, that неделя is a на word. To say ‘last / this / next week’ you use на + Prepositional Case.
When denoting time periods of a week or longer, you use + Prepositional Case.
When denoting time periods shorter than a week, you use + Accusative Case. Remember?
- В понеде́льник у меня́ бу́дет встре́ча.
- В пя́тницу у нас бу́дет вечери́нка.
- В воскресе́нье я всегда́ отдыха́ю.
