Part I. Быть – ‘to be’

Part II. Verbs in the Future Tense

Быть + Infinitive of Verb (imperfective)
To express an action in the future tense, use a conjugated form of быть ‘to be’ + the infinitive of the imperfective verb you wish to use. Imperfective is a term that will mean more later. You have mostly seen only imperfective verbs in this class.

Read the following sets of sentences. Note the use of the imperfective as you examine the English translations.
Что вы бу́дете де́лать за́втра?
‘What are you going to do tomorrow?/What will you be doing tomorrow?’
За́втра выходно́й день. Я бу́ду отдыха́ть!
Tomorrow is a weekend day. I am going to rest!
За́втра рабо́чий день. Я бу́ду рабо́тать весь день!
Tomorrow is a working day. I will be working all day!
Каки́е у него́ пла́ны на ле́то? Он бу́дет путеше́ствовать?
What kind of plans does he have for the summer? Is he going to travel?
Да, он бу́дет путеше́ствовать по Евро́пе.
Yes, he will be traveling around Europe. (*по + Dative Case)
Где он бу́дет жить в Евро́пе?
Where will he live in Europe?
Он бу́дет жить в хосте́лах и студе́нческих общежи́тиях.
He’ll live in hostels and student dorms.
Сего́дня ве́чером у нас бу́дет встреча* в рестора́не.
*будет встреча literally means ‘a meeting will be’
We have a meeting this evening at a restaurant.
Пра́вда? О чём мы бу́дем говори́ть на э́той встре́че?
Really? What are we going to talk about at this meeting?
Мы бу́дем говори́ть об америка́нской поли́тике. Всё бу́дет о́чень интере́сно.
We are going to talk about American politics. Everything will be very interesting.
Бу́дем наде́яться.
We will hope. (Let’s hope.)
Ты бу́дешь игра́ть в хокке́й?
Are you going to play hockey?
Нет, в э́том году я не бу́ду игра́ть. Вре́мени нет! Я бу́ду то́лько учи́ться.
No, this year I won’t be playing. There’s no time! I will just be studying.
Ты лю́бишь меня́?
Do you love me?
Да, я всегда́ бу́ду люби́ть тебя́.
Yes, I will always love you.
