A note about BLUE

The word голубо́й is often described as ‘light blue’ and the word си́ний is typically ‘dark blue’. Why are we learning two shades of blue when we’re not doing the same for green or red? It’s NOT just so I can squeeze in a soft-stem adjective with синий, I swear!

In general the distinction is light blue / dark blue.

That said, English & Russian just don’t line up in where they draw the line between light and dark.

It saddens me to admit that I STILL struggle to know where the line is that separates голубо́й from си́ний.

The following are images searches from Flickr.

голубо́й

си́ний

Typically, the не́бо ‘sky’ is голубо́е and мо́ре (a Russian sea, anyway) is си́нее.
