4.4 Грамма́тика – Ordinal numbers
Грамма́тика
Ordinal numbers are used to describe relative numerical order: first, second, third, fourth, etc… Cardinal numbers are the individual numbers themselves: one, two, three, four, etc… In Russian, like in English, some ordinals are obviously derived from the cardinal forms; others are not.
- В Росси́и пе́рвый день неде́ли – понеде́льник.
- In Russia, the first day of the week is Monday.
- Второ́й день – вто́рник.
- Тре́тий день – среда́.
- Четвёртый день – четве́рг.
- Пя́тый день – пя́тница.
- Шесто́й день – суббо́та.
- Седьмо́й день – воскресе́нье.
You may notice (I hope) that all these ordinal numbers look suspiciously like adjectives. Well, they are.
Below are ordinal numbers 1st – 31st. You may guess why you might need exactly those numbers. On the next page, you will to practice these. *Note the unexpected and soft endings for the ordinal number ‘third’.
Read over all of these. Try saying them out loud on your own, noting stress marks. When you read them, do you hear the words for cardinal numbers anywhere?
You will need to memorize these!
We’re learning how to say the 1st to the 30th for a very specific reason. Given the other topics we’ve learned so far, any guesses why we need ordinal numbers here? After studying this table, how do you think you would say the 31st?
*Note: these are given in their masculine singular forms!
