4.4 Grammar: Ordinal numbers
Ordinal numbers are used to describe relative numerical order: first, second, third, fourth, etc… Cardinal numbers are the individual numbers themselves: one, two, three, four, etc… In Russian, like in English, some ordinals are obviously derived from the cardinal forms; others are not.
- In Russia, the first day of the week is Monday.
You may notice (I hope) that all these ordinal numbers look suspiciously like adjectives. Well, they are.
Below are ordinal numbers 1st – 31st. You may guess why you might need exactly those numbers. On the next page, you will find a Quizlet to help you learn these. *Note the unexpected and soft endings for ‘third’. Memorize these.
We’re learning how to say the 1st to the 30th for a very specific reason. Any guesses what that is? After studying this table, how do you think you would say the 31st?
