4.3 Language and Speech – Ходи́ть (to go)

Sign to walk

A new verb in your vocabulary this unit is ‘ходи́ть‘, which means ‘to go’. It can ONLY refer to going somewhere regularly. You canNOT use it to mean you are going somewhere right now. There is another verb for the ‘am going / on my way right now’ meaning. We’ll learn that one a little later.

For now, consider these examples:

Children walking to school Мы хо́дим на уро́к.

We go to class.

Couple going to a restaurant Роди́тели хо́дят в рестора́ны.

(My) parents go to restaurants.

Woman lifting weight Подру́га ча́сто хо́дит в спортза́л.

(My) friend often goes to the gym.

Yoga Class В сре́ду я хожу́ на йо́гу.

On Wednesday, I go to yoga.

People at work Вы хо́дите на рабо́ту ка́ждый день?

Do you go to work every day?

Notice what happens to the destination – the place one goes. You should recognize the prepositions ‘в / на’. You know to use them when describing location of things – when answer the question ‘Где?’ With the verb ‘ходи́ть‘, however, you will often express a destination (not location) and answer the question ‘Куда́’? The same prepositions you learned before are used here to mean ‘to’ and they take the Accusative Case when describing destination.
Ходи́ть – to go
Я хожу́ – I go Мы хо́дим – We go
Ты хо́дишь – You go Вы хо́дите – You all / You go
Он / Она хо́дит – He / She goes Они хо́дят – They go
