3.3 Grammar: Вы лю́бите пи́ццу? (More with Accusative Case)

Люби́мая Грамма́тика

Recall talking about what you like to do and your hobbies. What if what you like (or love) isn’t a verb at all but a thing (noun), like chocolate or maybe a verb + a thing, like watching TV or listening to music? Now that you have the Accusative Case, you can do this!

Что вы лю́бите? – ‘What do you love / like?’

Что вы лю́бите делать?

What can you say about yourself?

About myself, I can say the following.

yoga Я люблю́ йогу.
(this is not actually me…)
chocolate Я люблю́ шокола́д!
Cappuccino coffee Я люблю́ ко́фе!

NOTE: I HAVE to use the Accusative Case here to talk about WHAT I love, which is literally the object of my affection.

man reading a book Я люблю́ чита́ть кни́ги.
Singing and listening to music Я люблю́ слу́шать му́зыку.

  • Why is ‘музыка’ in the Accusative Case?
  • Although it’s not the object of ‘любить’, it IS the object of ‘слушать’.
a deck of playing cards Я люблю́ игра́ть в ка́рты.
person holding remote pointing at TV Я люблю́ смотре́ть интере́сные фи́льмы.
