Which languages you understand (понима́ть)? Which language(s) do you speak (говори́ть)? Consider also which language you don’t understand or speak. Use the verbs here and the constructions you saw on the previous page to express these thoughts about yourself.

I’ll go first.

понима́ть – to understand

• Я понима́ю по-англи́йски. Я понима́ю по-ру́сски. Я понима́ю чуть-чу́ть по-че́шски. Я не понима́ю по-францу́зски.I understand English. I understand Russian. I understand a little Czech. I don’t understand French.

говори́ть – to speak

• Я говорю́ по-англи́йски и по-ру́сски. Я говорю́ чуть-чуть по-испа́нски. Я не говорю́ по-по́льски. I speak English and Russian. I speak a little Spanish. I don’t speak Polish.

Note how the sentences are constructed. Talk with your classmates. Other than English, what languages do people understand and speak?

How would you ask your classmate if they understand or speak Chinese? Spanish? Arabic? Take a look. Note how the ending of the verbs have to change for ‘ты’!

1. Ты понима́ешь по-кита́йски? Ты говори́шь по-кита́йски?
2. Ты понима́ешь по-испа́нски? Ты говори́шь по-испа́нски?
3. Ты понима́ешь или говори́шь по-ара́бски?

How would you tell another classmate what you learned? Notice here that the verb changes again when the subject is ‘он / она́’.

1. Он понима́ет по-кита́йски. Он и говори́т по-кита́йски.
2. Он понима́ет чуть-чу́ть по-испа́нски, но не говори́т (по-испа́нски).
3. Она́ не понима́ет по-ара́бски. Она́ хорошо́ понима́ет и говори́т по-ру́сски и по-англи́йски.
