2.5 Grammar: Жить (to live) and Говори́ть (to speak)

Люби́мая Грамма́тика

Watch the following video. I go over the conjugations of these verbs. They are NOT predictable. Watch for how they conjugate and LISTEN to how they sound.

The verb жить warrants particular focus because its conjugation includes a ‘в’ throughout the conjugation paradigm and comes before the ending. Also noteworthy is the ending itself for this verb. When a first conjugation type has a stressed ending, as this one does, the vowel is ‘ё’.

жить = to live
Я жи-в-у́
I live.
Мы жи-вём.
‘We live.’
Ты жи-вёшь.
‘You live.’
Вы жи-вёте.
‘You all / You (formal) live.’
Он / она́ жи-вёт.
‘He / She lives.’
Они́ жи-в-у́т.
‘They live.’

*Dashes are used solely as a visual aide to illustrate the various components of the conjugated forms.

Some examples are provided. Pay attention to the Russian vs. English translations:

Наприме́р

Где вы живёте?
‘Where do you live?

Я живу́ в Теха́се.
‘I live in Texas.’

*Note the use of “do” in the English question. It is NOT used in the Russian.

Наприме́р

Вы живёте в кварти́ре или в до́ме?
‘Do you live in an apartment or a house?’
*Again, note the use of “do” in the English translation. It is NOT used in the Russian.

Мы (сын, муж, я) живём в до́ме.
‘We (my son, husband, and I) live in a house.’

Где живу́т ва́ши роди́тели?
‘Where do your parents live?’

Мои́ роди́тели то́же живу́т в Теха́се, но в го́роде Ли́вингстон.
‘My parents also live in Texas but in the city Livingston.’
