Грамма́тика
Где?
Where?
You know now that Где? means ‘Where (is/are)’? In all of the examples, the answers are very simple. Some only have a one word answer, others have a few words, including:
здесь | ‘here’ | |
(вон) там | ‘(over) there’ | |
дома | ‘(at) home’ | |
(Я) не зна́ю. | ‘(I) don’t know’ |
To ask where something is in Russian is really straightforward. Read and listen to the following examples.
Где Ива́н?
Ива́н до́ма. |
Where is Ivan?
Ivan is at home. |
|
Где ве́щи?
Ве́щи здесь. |
Where are (my) things?
(Your) things are here. |
|
Где туале́т?
Туале́т там. |
Where is the bathroom?
The bathroom is there. |
|
Где он?
Вот он. |
Where is he? He is (right) here. |
|
Где такси́?
Вон там такси́. |
Where is a taxi?
There’s a taxi over there. |
|
Где ру́чка?
Тут ру́чка. |
Where is (a/my/the) pen?
Here is (a/the) pen. |
Recall, there is no present tense form of the verb ‘to be’, meaning that Где Иван? translates into English as Where is Ivan?
*Note the words вот and вон often act as intensifiers for здесь and там, respectively, but they can be heard on their own and in other contexts with slightly different meanings.
