Cognate Reading

The following Russian words are cognates with English, meaning that they are words with a similar sound and meaning as in English. Once you hear or read them out loud, you will probably understand what they mean. Practice reading them yourself and then match them with the correct English meaning.

Non-Cognate Vocab & Reading

Now that you are fairly familiar with these letters, you can get additional experience with non-cognate words in Russian. These words are part of your vocabulary this unit and you will need to spend some extra time learning them, since they don’t look or sound like English words. You will be using these particular words a lot!  Practice reading and pronouncing the words below and try to imitate the pronunciation from the recording. Then match them with their meaning in English.
