Little Important Words
You know that all prepositions in Russian take some case. You’ve learned several that take Prepositional, including ‘о’, ‘в’, ‘на’; Accusative, including ‘в’, ‘на’; Dative, including ‘к’; Instrumental, including ‘с’, ‘за’, ‘пе́ред’, ‘под’, ‘над’, ‘ме́жду’; and Genitive, including у, от, с, из, без.
Now to give you a few more prepositions that take Genitive Case. Specifically, these prepositions concern placement and location. Really, there are only 3 new prepositions. There are a few other locational adverbs, however, that combine with ‘от‘ that I want you to learn.

| [Audio] | Недалеко́ от но́вого стадио́на нахо́дится кафе́. | Not far from the stadium is a cafe. |
| [Audio] | Я живу́ недалеко́ от городско́й больни́цы. | I live not far from the metropolitan hospital. (We might say: I don’t live far from the hospital – OR – I live close to the hospital.) |
| [Audio] | Сле́ва от ста́рого моста́ стои́т це́рковь. | To the left of the old bridge is a church. |
| [Audio] | Спра́ва от ста́рого моста́ нахо́дится истори́ческий музе́й. | To the right of the old bridge is a historical museum. |
Compare with these location prepositions you already know and love so well:
Prepositional: в, на
- Люби́мый рестора́н нахо́дится в це́нтре го́рода.
- Ко́шка сиди́т на голове́.
Instrumental: за, под, перед, над, между, рядом с
- Ла́мпа стои́т ря́дом с дива́ном.
- Ко́шка спит под телеви́зором.
- Ковёр лежит пе́ред шка́фом.
- Часы́ вися́т над окно́м.
- Корзи́на стои́т ме́жду дива́ном и телеви́зором.
- Го́сти сидя́т за столо́м.
**Notice, the use of the verb ‘нахо́дится’ – to be located. It is a ‘reflexive’ verb.**
To say where things or people are located, you will often hear this verb:
- Ба́шня ‘Э́йфелева’ нахо́дится в Пари́же.
- Стадио́н нахо́дится на ка́мпусе.
- Го́ры ‘Ура́лы’ нахо́дятся в Росси́и.
- Зи́лкер Парк нахо́дится в це́нтре О́стина.
