Watch the following video. I’m going to draw out (very poorly) a room with items to illustrate what all the new prepositions mean and how they sound.

All of these prepositions are part of your Словарь this unit. These can all, as you saw, be used to answer the question Где?, which, until now, you mostly likely associated with the prepositions ‘в’ and ‘на + Prepositional Case. Those prepositions, meaning ‘in’ and ‘on’, respectively, have not changed in any way. We are just adding more prepositions to your repertoire. These new prepositions take the Instrumental Case when describing location.
за (чем?) | behind (what?) |
пе́ред (чем?) | in front of (what?) |
над (чем?) | above (what?) |
под (чем?) | under (what?) |
ме́жду (чем?) | between (what?) |
ря́дом с (чем?) | next to (what?) |
Note: Before certain consonant clusters, an (о) is added to prepositions ending in a consonant:
- пе́редо мной – in front of me
- на́до мной – above me
- по́до мной – under me
Don’t forget rules for Prepositional Case endings! [LINK NEEDS UPDATE] Also, there is a subset of masculine words that take a stressed -у́ ending [LINK NEEDS UPDATE] in the prepositional Case. You need to know this set because the words are so common.
