Read and listen to the following Russian descriptions of people.

Part 2: Кем вы рабо́таете?

What’s your job? Who do you work as?

In Unit 8 you learned about the Instrumental Case. Just as it can be used to describe the means by which we do something, it can be used to indicate the way in which people work. Think of Instrumental Case endings as imparting an ‘in this way‘, ‘by means of‘, or ‘as‘ meaning.

For the non-students above, we can talk about them in the following way. Note the use of the Instrumental endings. To review spelling rules for endings, go to the Grammar Chart page or the Instrumental Case instructional page.

Еле́на рабо́тает преподава́тельницей.
Elena works as an instructor.

Ко́ля рабо́тает инжене́ром.
Kolya works as an engineer.

Евге́ний рабо́тает по́варом.
Evgenij works as a cook.

А́нна рабо́тает писа́тельницей.
Anna works as a writer.

Макси́м рабо́тает худо́жником.
Maksim works as an artist.

Гео́ргий рабо́тает президе́нтом.
George works as a president.
