8.2 Grammar: Хоте́ть – To Want

At this point, you may also want to say how ‘to want’ in Russian. Maybe you have already picked it up. Let’s learn it formally here. This verb, like есть, is irregular. It does NOT conjugate according to the patterns you have learned so far. It’s more like a combination of first and second conjugations. You will have to memorize the forms, but given how often we say ‘want’, it doesn’t take long to learn. Watch and read below:

Part I. The Present Tense

ХОТЕ́ТЬ – to want
Я хочу́ Мы хоти́м
Ты хо́чешь Вы хоти́те
Он / Она́ хо́чет Они́ хотя́т

Наприме́р

Я хочу́ спать.
I want to sleep.

Она́ хо́чет есть пельме́ни.
She wants to eat pelmeni.

Они́ хотя́т пить айра́н.
They want to drink ayran.

Part II. The Past Tense

Past tense is, however, completely predictable!

Он хоте́л есть блины́ ка́ждый день.
He wanted to eat bliny every day.

Она хоте́ла про́бовать но́вое блю́до ка́ждую нелелю.
She wanted to try a new dish every week.

Они ча́сто хоте́ли пить ко́фе в Ита́лии.
They often wanted to drink coffee in Italy.
