1. The cardinal directions, се́вер, юг, восто́к, за́пад, take ‘на‘. To say something is IN THE NORTH or IN THE EAST, you must use Prepositional Case in Russian, like you might expect:
жить на се́вере
to live in the north
учи́ться на восто́ке
to study in the east
рабо́тать на ю́ге
to work in the south
отдыха́ть на за́паде
to relax in the west
2. Similarly, if you are traveling in the direction of north, south, east or west, you use ‘на’ but with Accusative Case endings, like you would expect when expressing movement in a direction:
е́хать на се́вер
to travel (to the) north
е́хать на юг
to travel (to the) south
е́здить на восто́к
to travel (to the) east
е́здить на за́пад
to travel (to the) west

Looking at the map above, consider the following sentences about students traveling from Russia:
Дми́трий е́дет на за́пад, в Кана́ду.
Dmitry is going west to Canada.
Ва́ня е́дет на восто́к, в Кита́й.
Vanya is going east, to China.
Ко́ля е́дет на юго-восто́к, в Индоне́зию.
*юго-восто́к = south east
Kolya is going to the south east, to Indonesia.
Маргари́та е́дет на юго-за́пад, в Брази́лию.
*юго-за́пад = south west
Margarita is headed to south west to Brazil.
Ка́тя из Со́чи. Она́ е́дет на се́вер, в Сиби́рь.
Katya is from Sochi. She is going north to Siberia.
