7.3 Grammar: Verbs of Motion, Часть 2

Люби́мая Грамма́тика

You may remember my mentioning that, in Russian, you specify whether your motion is by foot or by vehicle. Last module, you read and heard examples of the ‘by foot’ type. You worked with идти́ / ходи́ть (both imperfective verbs). You learned the uni-direction идти carries the meaning of motion toward a destination. It often means ‘movement’ there right now. It can also refer to just ONE LEG of a round trip. The multi-directional ходить refers to regular travel (by foot) to a place or event.

There are two very similar verbs that refer to movement by vehicle. They are е́хать / е́здить. Their meanings are parallel to the ‘by foot’ verbs. Watch the following slideshow video for an explanation and some examples.
