7.1 Language and Culture – Отку́да вы? (Where are you from?)
Have you, by any chance, been wondering how to say where you’re from? You’ve learned how to say so many things about yourself, but this one very basic thing you would normally say when you introduce yourself has been missing. That’s supposed to be funny. We couldn’t talk about this without learning the Genitive Case forms.

I’m from Texas.
Муж из Вирги́нии.

(My) husband is from Virginia.
Моя́ колле́га, Же́ня, из Росси́и – из го́рода Санкт Петербу́рг.

(го́род »» из го́рода)
My colleague, Zhenya, is from Russian – from the city St. Petersburg.
На́ша Мо́лли из Вашингто́на.

Our Molly is from Washington.
Моя́ подру́га из Москвы́.

My friend is from Moscow.
The RULES
What do you notice? When you say where you’re from, you HAVE to use the Genitive Case. The place one is ‘from’ goes into Genitive. The preposition ‘from’ is either:
- из
- с
MOST of the time you will use ‘из’. ANY time you use ‘в’ to say in or at a place, you use ‘из’ to say from that place. Likewise, anytime you use ‘на’ to express being ‘in’ or ‘at’ a place, you use ‘с’ to say from that place.
Например
Я живу́ в Теха́се.
I live in Texas.
Я из Теха́са.
I am from Texas.
Оле́г живёт в лесу́.
Oleg lives in the forest.
Оле́г из ле́са.
Oleg is from the forest.
Влади́мир живёт в Москве́.
Vladimir lives in Moscow.
Влади́мир из Москвы́.
Vladimir is from Moscow.
Светла́на живёт на Аля́ске.
Svetlana lives in Alaska.
Светла́на с Аля́ски.
Svetlana is from Alaska.
Анто́н живёт на о́строве Гава́йи.
Anton lives on the island (of) Hawaii.
Анто́н с о́строва Гава́йи.
Anton is from the island (of) Hawaii.
