6.3 Grammar: Ско́лько лет?

If you want to say how many YEARS someone is, there are some additional rules to learn. This is only when you want to say ‘years old’ after you indicate the age.

Ско́лько вам лет? How old are you?
The rule is simple, but there is a rule and you have to remember it:
1. AFTER the number оди́н (1), use год, whether simply ‘оди́н’ or два́дцать оди́н год or три́дцать оди́н год and so on, you use the word for year ‘год’. It may feel funny to say you are 21 year old (and not years), but that’s how they do it.
*Notice, this does NOT apply to 11 (оди́ннадцать)!
2. AFTER the numbers два, три, четы́ре (2, 3, 4), you use the Genitive form of year – го́да. This may be два́дцать два го́да (22), три́дцать два го́да (32), со́рок два го́да (42) …or три́дцать три го́да (33) and девяно́сто четы́ре го́да (94) and so on…the word for ‘years’ is го́да.
3. AFTER the number пять and higher (5+), you use a word we have never seen before – ‘лет’: пять лет, оди́ннадцать лет, два́дцать лет, три́дцать семь лет, and so on….
*Notice that the QUESTION itself uses ‘лет’ – Ско́лько лет? = How many years? Сколько? is the question word for ‘how many’ and it takes Genitive Case.
