6.1 Grammar: Нра́вится? (Like something)

Introduction
You learned how to say that you like doing something:
Мне нра́вится спать.
Мне нра́вится чита́ть кни́ги.
Мне нра́вится слу́шать заба́вную ру́сскую поп-му́зыку.
You saw that Dative case personal pronouns are used when saying you like to do something. The next thing we’re going to look it is using this expression to say you like (or don’t like) a think or person. It can feel a little wonky to English speakers, so I want you to watch the following video.

In the video you saw some Dative endings, as in ‘Я нравлюсь сыну и маме,’ (My mom and my son like me), which to my native English ears still sounds a little wrong, despite how many times I teach it. For today, let’s focus on two things: Dative Case personal pronouns & the verb нра́виться – ‘to appeal to’:
First, for this class you will mostly only need the 3rd person singular and plural forms highlighted below to say ‘what’ is liked:

Second, you use one of the following personal pronouns in the Dative case to say ‘who’ likes.

Here are some more examples with this verb and the Dative pronouns. Look over them carefully. Each sentence is translated and explained. Examine them closely:

- вам is Dative case of Вы and means ‘to you’
- русская музыка is Nominative case
Да, мне о́чень нра́вится она́!
Yes, I like it very much!
- мне is Dative case of я and means ‘to me’
- она is the Nominative case personal pronoun for музыка
Вам нра́вится ру́сский язы́к?
Do you like Russian language?
- вам is Dative case of the personal pronoun Вы
- русский язык is in the Nominative case
Да, коне́чно, мне он о́чень нра́вится!
Yes, of course I like it very much!
- мне is the Dative case of the personal pronoun я and means ‘to me’
- он is the Nominative case personal pronoun for язык
Э́то Ива́н. Ему́ нра́вится францу́зская литерату́ра. Ещё ему́ нра́вятся иностра́нные языки́.
This is Ivan. He likes French literature. He also likes foreign languages.
Э́то А́нна. Ей нра́вятся вся́кие ра́зные соцсе́ти. Мне они́ не нра́вятся.
This is Anna. She likes all kinds of social media. I don’t like them.
Э́то мои́ де́ти. Им нра́вятся ру́сские му́льтики.
These are my children. They like Russian cartoons.
