5.3 Grammar: Adjectives, Prepositional Case

Introduction
Adjectives, like nouns, get different CASE endings. Let’s look at what happens when you have to use the Prepositional case with adjectives.

Examples
- Ко́шка спит на ро́зовом дива́не.
‘The cat is sleeping on a pink sofa.’ - Оле́г гуля́ет в тёмном лесу.
‘Oleg is taking a walk in a dark forest.’ - Мы у́жинаем в хоро́шем рестора́не.
‘We are having dinner in a nice (good) restaurant.’ - Каранда́ш лежи́т в кра́сной су́мке.
‘The pencil is (lying) in the red purse. - Календа́рь виси́т на бе́лой стене́.
‘The calendar is hanging on a white wall.’ - Они́ отдыха́ют на Чёрном Мо́ре.
‘They are relaxing/vacationing at the Black Sea. - Ле́на живёт в студе́нческом общежи́тии.
‘Lena lives in a student dorm.’
The Rules
Masculine and Neuter Adjectives
Masculine and neuter adjectives look the same in Prepositional Case. That’s nice of Russian.
If the ending is unstressed and follows one of the 5 letters (ш, щ, ж, ч, ц) or if the stem is soft, add -ем. See chart below.
- в хоро́шем рестора́не
- на си́нем мо́ре
If the ending is stressed or if the stem is hard and does not end in one of those special letters, add -ом.
- в ста́ром до́ме
- в изве́стном общежи́тии
- о молодо́м челове́ке
Feminine Adjectives
For feminine adjectives, if the ending is unstressed and follows one of the 5 letters (ш, щ, ж, ч, ц) or the stem is soft, add -ей.
- о хоро́шей кни́ге
- в си́ней руба́шке
If the ending is stressed or if the stem is hard and does not end in end in one of those special letters, add -ой.
- на плохо́й посте́ли
- о краси́вой маши́не
The Questions
Nominative adjectives answer the question како́й? (кака́я?, како́е?, каки́е?)
In the Prepositional Case, the question is в како́м? (в како́й?), as in,:
На како́м дива́не спит ко́шка?
What couch is the cat sleeping on? (Lit. ‘On which couch is the cat sleeping?)
В како́й су́мке лежи́т каранда́ш?
What purse is the pencil in? (Lit. ‘In which purse is the pencil lying?’)
В како́м году́ вы родили́сь?
What year were you born? (Lit. ‘In which year were you born?’)
