5.1 Language and Speech – Есть (There is …)

I am going to give you a gift right now and that is:  Есть.

Есть very simply translates into English as “There is/are….”.

What about it makes iт something you’d like to have in your Russian repertoire? Well, how about this:

  • It doesn’t decline for case.
  • It doesn’t conjugate.
  • It doesn’t EVER CHANGE.
  • It’s just есть and we use it to indicate the EXISTENCE of something, very much like when we in English say, “There is … / There are …”

Наприме́р:

Restaurant В Ри́ге есть хоро́шие рестора́ны.

There are good restaurants in Riga.

Stadium На ка́мпусе есть стадио́н и спортза́лы.

There are gyms and a stadium on campus.

Office В о́фисе есть кни́жный шкаф и большо́е окно́.

There is a bookshelf and big window in the office.

Есть = There is / There are … and it indicates the existence of something.

Тепе́рь попрактику́емся….
