The Russian calendar and the days of the week
There are several things worth mentioning about the Russian calendar. For the moment, however, let us talk about the layout of an actual Russian calendar.
- For one, the first day of the week is понеде́льник ‘Monday’, not воскресе́нье ‘Sunday’.
- Days of the week and months are not capitalized.
- Russian calendars can either list the days of the week across the top, from left to right, like we do, but often you will see the days of the week listed along the left-hand side of the page. See below for examples:
Starting with понеде́льник ‘Monday’ days of the week are listed across the top from left to right.
On the following calendar (from 2025), starting with понеде́льник (пн), days of the week are listed down the left and are abbreviated. Here ALL weekend days and holidays are highlighted. Russians enjoy a LOT of holidays. They do NOT work as much as we do, and they do not see the American addiction to work and no play as anything but unhealthy.
