The calendar and the days of the week
There are several things worth mentioning about the calendar. For the moment, however, let us talk about the layout of an actual Russian calendar.
- For one, the first day of the week is понеде́льник ‘Monday’, which actually means ‘start of the week’, and not воскресе́нье ‘Sunday’.
- Days of the week and months are NOT capitalized in Russian.
- Typically, calendars in Russian can either list the days of the week across the top, from left to right, like what we may be used to seeing, but often you will see the days of the week listed along the left-hand side of the page. See below for examples:
Starting with понеде́льник ‘Monday’ days of the week can be listed across the top from left to right:
On the following calendar (from 2025), starting with понеде́льник (пн), days of the week are listed down the left and are abbreviated. Here ALL weekend days and holidays are highlighted. Note that Russian holidays may be different than American ones.
